Japanese confectionery Cake.jp has released a new muskmelon cake based on the Gum-Gum Fruit from A piece. The company released the cake on A piece protagonist Monkey D. Luffy’s birthday on May 5, 2022. The cake is available to order in Japan on the company’s website and will cost ¥13,000 (about $100). [Thanks, Game Watch!]
The Gum-Gum Fruit, or Gomu Gomu no Mi, is a mythical fruit known as the Devil Fruit that gives the person who eats it rubber-like magical powers. Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the main protagonist of the series, gets his rubber powers from this fruit. As such, the Gum-Gum Fruit and other Devil Fruit variations played an important role in the A piece series since its inception.
The Gum-Gum Fruit is similar to a Japanese melon but is purple instead of green with a spiral pattern. The cake contains fruit-based ingredients, including an outer shell made from the skin of a muskmelon. Layers of purple sponge cakes, melon whipped cream, strawberries and melon are layered in the cake. The outer skin of the cake uses edible purple plastic chocolate, and the rod is an inedible ornament.
The cake is a special collaborative version of Cake.jp’s Whole Melon Cake. It contains similar ingredients without the Gum-Gum Fruit design.
