Luckily, State College is home to a variety of treats that are sure to appease your sweet tooth in the height of summer.
Whether you’re strolling through downtown State College or wanting to take a scenic drive, these choices will be there to please.
Penn State Berkey Creamery
It might be the most obvious choice on this list, but it certainly never disappoints. Penn State’s award-winning ice cream shop offers more than 100 flavors of ice cream, 10 flavors of frozen yogurt and six flavors of sorbet, according to its website.
Conveniently located on campus on Curtin Road, you can easily walk around and grab a snack. You can choose from over 20 flavors each day and choose to eat from a mug, cone or pint to save for later.
The Creamery also sells a variety of other food and dairy products, including its Whole Chocolate Milk which won first place in the 2021 World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Competition in the ‘Whole Chocolate Milk’ category. .
La Crémerie is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Creamery with cold stones
If you are in downtown State College, you can go to Cold Stone Creamery at 321 E. Beaver Ave.
The ice cream parlor franchise offers a variety of frozen desserts, including ice cream, milkshakes, cakes and smoothies, according to its website.
Cold Stone lets you have a little fun and customize your ice cream order by mixing candies, cakes, fruits, nuts and dessert sauces on its granite stone counters.
The State College site is open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
Just down Cold Stone at 430 E. College Ave. you’ll find yourself at Yogurt Express.
The frozen yogurt shop offers a variety of flavors as well as a toppings bar. The shop also serves smoothies, cookie cakes and acai bowls, according to its Facebook page.
Yogurt Express has longer hours than many frozen dessert shops in the area, as it’s open from 10 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
If you need a late-night treat, Yogurt Express might be the answer.
Italian gelato and ice cream custard from Rita
About three miles from campus, at 1609 N. Atherton St., Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard can be spotted.
The franchised frozen dessert shop is well known for its variety of Italian gelato flavors and dessert combinations.
If you fancy something lighter and sweeter, you can choose from its Italian gelato menu or ask for a misto shake or an iced drink.
If you’re looking for a creamier treat, you can get their award-winning custard or milkshakes.
The North Atherton site is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. Its website is updated daily with the selection of desserts of the day.
About four miles down Atherton Street from Rita is the State College staple, Meyer Dairy.
Meyer Dairy has served the State College area for more than 100 years and offers a variety of farm-fresh produce to its customers, according to its website.
Its frozen desserts are made from the milk of the company’s dairy cows and offer different flavors year-round, according to its website.
In addition to ice cream, the family business also sells its own baked goods, cheese, maple syrup, honey, and jam, which are also sold at other small businesses in the area. This store will not only appease your sweet tooth, but also some of the other cravings you might have.
The shop is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.
