
Volunteers needed for After the Fire
MECHANICVILLE — After the fire, the monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 at the Hillcrest Fire Department, 145 Pruyn Hill Road.
The non-profit organization assists Saratoga County residents who have suffered loss due to fire by providing gift cards, one night stay at a participating hotel/motel, a Red Cross referral, materials information and emotional support.
Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

The local author signs his book
BOLTING LANDING — Author Bill Gates will be signing his latest book, “Growing Up on Lake George” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28 at the Bolton Historical Museum, 4924 Main St. (Route 9N).
The book features humorous stories, interesting people, events, fires, steamships and over 200 photos.
A retired teacher, Lake George steamer captain and author of 12 local history books, Gates worked at his parents’ Bill Gates Diner and was a collector of local historical memorabilia and stories throughout his life.

Clifton Park to open swimming pools
Clifton Park will open the city’s swimming pools from Memorial Day weekend with the opening of Country Knolls on May 29, Barney Road Pool on June 5 and Locust Lane Pool on June 23.
The tentative closing date for all three is August 21, depending on staffing levels.
The Learn to Swim program will be back with two lesson sessions. Registration will open on Monday, May 23, with the first week of registration for families in the city. Lessons will be held at Country Knolls Pool with Session 1 offered July 11-22 and Session 2 offered July 25-August 25. 5.
The City of Clifton Park and Saratoga County have partnered to offer free lifeguard training from 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 6-10 and 10-4:30 p.m. June 11-12 at Locust Pool Lane.

Dissertation writing group meets
COPAKE – Anyone writing a memoir, or even considering writing one, can join the Roe Jan Memoir Group from 5-7 p.m. June 2 at the Roeliff Jansen Community Library, 9091 Route 22.
The group meets monthly on the first Thursday of each month. Writers can share their stories in an atmosphere of support and creativity and get inspired to keep writing.

Charlton Heritage 5,000km Run and Walk
CHARLTON – The 25th Annual Charlton Heritage 5K Run & Walk and One Mile Kids Fun Run will take place at 10 a.m. on June 4 from the Old Red Schoolhouse, 2009 Maple Ave.
Registration is $30 before Tuesday, May 24; $35 after this date. Proceeds support the Charlton Historical Society.

Learn about weapons during the Revolutionary War
STEPHENTOWN – Mike Companion and members of the Second Continental Artillery will give a talk and demonstration on Armament in the Revolutionary War at 2 p.m. June 5 at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road.
The Second Continental Artillery is the Color Party of the Saratoga Battle Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution. Companion is a former chapter president and a history teacher. The group will show muskets and artillery pieces and explain their use in battles.

SCHENECTADY – The Animal Protective Foundation’s first-ever Woofstock fundraising music festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on June 12 at Mohawk Harbor.
In addition to music, the family-friendly, dog-friendly event will feature food trucks, craft beer, specialty vendors and a kids’ zone with activities for all ages. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.

The Waterford Lions Club organizes a fundraising walk
WATERFORD – The Waterford Lions Club will be sponsoring a 2.5-mile fundraising walk from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 18 in the Waterford Halfmoon School car park and football pitch, 125 Middletown Road.
Participants can register and obtain pledges. Proceeds will go to the school’s Backpack program, a food supplement program for elementary school students, and Anthony’s Closet, in memory of former student Anthony Blaauboer who drowned in 2018, which provides basic necessities for middle and high school students.

German-American Club Concerts
ALBANY — German-American Club Albany will host two free concerts by its newly formed German Marching Band at 7 p.m. on June 30 and July 28 at the club’s grounds, 32 Cherry St.
The program will feature polkas, waltzes and marches with everything from Strauss to Latin favorites mixed in.
Participants can bring lawn chairs or use picnic tables in place. German cakes and coffee will be available as well as liquid refreshments.
Carey Gabay Memorial Scholarship Candidates Wanted
High school students can apply for the State University of New York Carey Gabay Memorial Scholarship by June 30.
The scholarship will award full scholarships to five students to attend four-year SUNY colleges beginning in the 2022-23 school year. It will cover tuition, room and board, tuition, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses for five students. Fellows will also participate in a mentorship program.
Gabay, a lawyer and civil servant, was a victim of gun violence in 2015. He grew up in public housing, graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Law School, worked tirelessly in public office, from 2011 as assistant counsel to the former governor. and later as the first assistant attorney for the Empire State Development Corporation.
