Chinatown is full of hidden gems, and with over a hundred restaurants, it’s not hard to find a delicious meal. But while Soho is full of restaurants, there are only a handful of authentic bakeries.
One of them is the Golden Gate Cake Shop. The tiny Cantonese bakery is located on Macclesfield Street and sells everything from pandan cake to pork buns. Despite its size, the bakery offers more than 80 different kinds of oriental cakes.
With hundreds of positive reviews and a stellar 4.3 star rating on Google, the place is clearly loved by locals and tourists alike. So MyLondon visited the Golden Gate Cake shop to try several top-selling desserts.

Custard Bread – 5/5
Upon entering the bakery, it’s fair to say that I felt completely overwhelmed by the dozens of pastries available to me. Fortunately, a helpful assistant came to my rescue, directing me to one of the bakery’s bestsellers: the cream buns.
As a self-proclaimed dessert expert, all I can say is that this pain a la crème, with its glazed brioche bun and creamy custard, is simply life-changing. For something so perfectly executed, £1.60 seems like a small price to pay; to this day, I still see this bun in my dreams.
Baby pig cake with red beans – 3.5/5
Faced with over 80 gorgeous oriental cakes, it can be hard to know where to look. And yet, the Baby Pig Red Bean Cake, with its adorable design and cute size, proves to be fierce competition.
As advertised, the cake is filled with red bean paste which, rather counterintuitively, tastes incredibly sweet. However, the cake is also quite filling. At £4 it’s a bit pricey and the size makes it hard to handle, but those eyes alone are worth a whole star.
Lotus Paste with Egg Yolk – 4/5
Finally, Egg Yellow Lotus pastry – another weird recommendation. Don’t be put off by the £2.80 price tag as this patisserie is an experience in its own right. If you’re anything like me, you might not believe the pastry has a whole egg yolk in it, but rest assured it does. So for all egg lovers who appreciate a meal that is both sweet and savory, this 4-star pastry is made for you.
What to expect from your visit
The store is open Monday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is self-service so crowds and trays are provided for each customer near the entrance. However, don’t expect a long stay as there is barely enough space for people to queue let alone sit.
The bakery also makes custom cakes in bright colors and fun shapes such as Hello Kitty or zodiac signs. If you’re looking for something different, there’s no better place to go than the Golden Gate Cake Shop.
