Olivia DeJonge plays Priscilla Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film “Elvis,” which stars Austin Butler as the king of rock and roll. The biopic documents Elvis Presley’s relationship with his former manager, Colonel Tom Parker (portrayed by Tom Hanks) and Parker’s impact on Elvis’ declining career. Throughout, we see glimpses of his life and, of course, his relationship with Priscilla, whom he married on May 1, 1967, at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Luhrmann’s wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, famous for ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’, worked with her team to recreate a version of the Priscilla wedding dress found on the shelves while shopping disguised in Memphis, TN, so as to leave no trail of evidence that she was to be married. The dress, bought at retail and tried on only once in the dead of night, was completed with long beaded bishop’s sleeves, embroidered with lace and covered with a row of buttons at each wrist. It was finished with a three-foot veil, topped with a rhinestone tiara, and Priscilla dyed her hair a darker shade of brown to match Elvis’.
[Martin] thinks the wedding dress is the most faithful replica seen in the film’s 159 minutes.
Martin, who collaborated with Miuccia Prada on much of Priscilla’s ’60s wardrobe and also commissioned vintage pieces for the film (which includes 9,000 outfits), thinks the wedding dress is the ultimate replica. more perfect seen in the 159 minutes of the film, even if we only see him briefly. “We had detailed photos from the archives of what the lace looked like, and we purchased several different laces that were all lovingly sewn together to recreate the look as accurately as possible,” Martin tells POPSUGAR. “It was fully beaded and beaded by hand and had multiple layers of chiffon with a silk lining. A tulle trim was hand sewn to the hem so it floated perfectly as Priscilla walked. The upper part of the dress is so intricate and the bottom so simple and effortless.Sometimes these things are the hardest to do, especially in white or bridal, because they end up feeling overworked and overworked.
According to Martin, DeJonge couldn’t believe how real and beautiful the dress looked on her first fitting. “It was a treat to see all of this beautiful handwork on Olivia’s living physique. It was ethereal and otherworldly,” she says.
As for the accessories, Martin had a seamstress who had worked out wreaths of ballet thread on the attachment of the veil, which was jeweled silk. Although we can’t get a look at the bridal shoes in the film, Martin confirms that they are 50s ivory satin stiletto pumps that were actually ballroom dancing shoes – nearly identical to the closed-toe silhouette that Priscilla indeed wore at her wedding. day and a recommendation of Martin’s bridal shoes, as they’re high enough to provide lift, made bare to blend into the leg, and stable enough for dancing.
