Perhaps because of my way of being, I find donuts fascinating. Of course, at Universal Orlando, Homer Simpson would agree. If you catch Homer on the right day, he might sing about donuts for a while. Who knew Voodoo Donut offered nine different types of plain donuts?
I confidently admit that you might get lost in these type donuts here. I’ve been accused of being a “Stan” for Voodoo Donut before. So, allow me to write or sing for a moment about some plain cake donuts at Voodoo Donut. After all, who knew a plain cake donut could deliver so much flavor.
The donut to be reviewed today would proclaim “My name is…” Eight Mile Cake Donut. The creators of these donuts wanted guests to know this was the real slim shady. If my overt use of Eminem song titles didn’t bother you too much, then you can see to some degree that today’s donut offers an homage to Eminem.
The Eight Mile Cake Donut is $2.75. As the category suggests, the base for this is a plain cake donut. In this case, the term ordinary cake is suitable. Voodoo Donut uses this term loosely, as seen in the Blueberry Cake Donut with inclusions of blueberries in the donut. Yet the base of these donuts comes from a well-prepared cake donut.
Not to read too much into the donut theme, but the Eminem-inspired donut features vanilla frosting. In addition to the frosting, many mini M&M candies reside.
Now that we’ve finished discussing the inspiration and composition of the donut, what does it taste like?
I prefer yeast donuts to cakes. The few times I’ve had this donut, the cake portion provided a good solid tasting base. Vanilla frosting works well. Still, the icing mostly works like glue to keep the candies on top. For this donut to be successful, the candy must shine.
However, Voodoo Donut has a hard time keeping its toppings from drying out. Good news, the candy on this one avoids this problem when I ate one. Bad news, the candies taste just adequate for this price.
If you’re looking for a donut here but aren’t brave enough for a “voodoo doll” for example, these cake donuts offer a bit of creativity and flavor. In my opinion, I would use the $2.75 on one of the best donuts here. As always, eat your way!
