The humble supermarket mud cake is a delicious and easy dessert. I’ll never forget the joy of picking one up on my way home from school when I was little – and the delicious taste hasn’t changed since either. It’s an Aussie classic for good reason!
However, sometimes the occasion calls for a dessert that’s a little more sophisticated than the modest mud cake from the supermarket. Maybe you need a tiered cake, rainbow frosting, or other miscellaneous embellishments. Although delicious, sometimes this cake just doesn’t have the visual “wow” factor.
Luckily for us, creative home bakers and busy mums have shared their simple tips for dressing up a supermarket mud cake. Here are three easy ways to dress up a supermarket cake for absolutely any occasion.
The rainbow cake
This one is for kids birthday parties, although I know I would be VERY happy with this cake for my adult birthday.

Who said supermarket cakes couldn’t be refined?

This versatile nude icing style from Oh So Busy Mum makes the original mud cakes totally unrecognizable. All you need to create this totally elegant masterpiece is three mud cakes, pre-made frosting, and some flowers for decoration. This showstopper can be prepared in minutes.
The drip cake
This is perhaps the simplest hack of all, and the result is no less impressive. Drip cakes are undeniably sophisticated, but can be used for a variety of occasions. Dress them up or down and they’re the perfect cake topper for most celebrations.

This hack only requires two cakes, premade frosting and Nutella, plus extra lollipops for decoration. After placing the cakes on top of each other and securing them with frosting, you can safely heat the Nutella and pour it over the cake like the one pictured above.
