More than 100 pupils from Corby’s school who were hoping to be crowned the winner of a cake design competition gathered to see one of their classmates receive a royal prize.
Pupils from Corby Old Village Primary School had been challenged to come up with a plan for a royal celebration cake fit for the Queen – and the cake was produced by the husband and wife team behind the Corby Butterwick Bakery.
Announced during the school’s Jubilee celebrations, parents, carers, children and staff were treated to refreshments and a dance performance before the cake was presented to the winner.
After a fierce wait, five-year-old reception student Alice Sharpe was declared the winner and two lucky girls were also awarded Butterwick prizes.
Alice said: “It’s really good to win. I am happy. I will share the cake with my friends.
As well as winning the huge sponge cake made to her specifications, Alice will be offered a tour of Butterwick’s head office for a behind-the-scenes look at the Rockingham Road Bakery.
Director Paula Thomas said: “This is a fantastic opportunity. It was amazing. The kids were so excited. Butterwick is part of our local community and they helped us celebrate the Jubilee and make it a very special occasion.
Finalists won vouchers from owners Butterwick, Ryan and Fiona Scarborough.
Fiona said: “It was incredibly difficult to choose a winner, but what made her entry so good was her amazing writing. The design was classic and traditional.
“It was nice to have this opportunity to bake the cake for the winner.”
The children presented the guests with cakes that they had prepared in their classes. They then performed dances learned in workshops representing styles from the seven decades of the Queen’s reign – from rock ‘n’ roll and twist to disco, street and hip-hop.
Each student received a platinum jubilee badge as a memento and the whole school learned the national anthem.
Ms Thomas said: “We are really, really proud of all the children. We had over 100 registrations and the kids performed amazingly.
“We would like to thank Butterwick for this award.”
